Welcome to the Pedorthic Foundation’s Website
The field of pedorthics (peh-DOR-thiks) began to emerge during the 1950s, as doctors and researchers sought ways to help military veterans and polio patients regain as much mobility as possible. These practitioners gained assistance from the footwear community, which responded by developing new technologies and devices that modified shoes and other footwear, making footwear a therapeutic component in treatment overseen by a medical team.
During our 35 years, the Foundation has supported research and educational scholarships with funds provided by individuals and companies involved in pedorthic activities. In addition, the Foundation has honored contributors to the advancement of pedorthic practice through awards and public recognition programs.
In 2009 the Foundation’s Board of Directors reviewed their mission statement and activities and approved a plan that will increase its work in providing research grants, educational scholarships and presentation of awards, but also reach out in the development of chartable pedorthic programs.
